Jesus was executed by Roman soldiers. The Roman Empire was in control of Judea at the time of Jesus' crucifixion, and it was Roman law that allowed for the death penalty. The Roman governor of Judea, Pontius Pilate, was the one who ultimately gave the order to execute Jesus. The Jewish leaders had already found Jesus guilty of blasphemy and handed him over to Pilate to be executed. Pilate, however, was hesitant to carry out the death sentence and tried to find a way to release Jesus. Ultimately, the Jewish leaders convinced Pilate to sentence Jesus to death. Pilate then ordered the Roman soldiers to carry out the execution. The soldiers stripped Jesus, beat him, and nailed him to the cross. They also placed a sign above his head declaring him "the King of the Jews." After Jesus died, the Roman soldiers pierced his side to make sure he was dead. Thus, it was Roman soldiers who carried out the execution of Jesus.
